Isn't Fun sweet?
So is John Mayer! "Baby, you're the only light I ever saw."
I ran for fear I'd have to say goodbye. The Format.
Paul’s last point is to “be strong in the Lord and in his…power.” We become soldiers for Christ when we accept Him and start living FOR him. Like any soldier in training, or one that’s ready to go out into battle, the person sending him out gives him all the materials he needs. In the same way God equips us to defend ourselves from “the devil’s schemes…the rulers…authorities…the powers of dark world [and] spiritual forces of evil.” In providing us with materials to fight all these things, we’re not fighting for ourselves, but for the kingdom of God. We have horrible monsters before us. Much like David had Goliath, we have Satan and the world. God equipped little David to beat the giant Goliath and glorify Him, that’s how we are equipped. When we put God before us, we always win. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
The armor is to keep us standing, to keep us standing before the Lord. The armor is consists of more protection than defense. For protection we have the belt of truth around our waists to stand firm in. What do belts do? They keep our pants up from falling, keep us from falling when we run. The truth keeps us from falling into sin. We know the truth and know better than to fall into temptation. When Christ went into the forest for 40 days and 40 nights he was tempted by Satan three times, by using God’s word, which is the truth, he overcame temptation AND Satan. The breastplate of righteousness in place guards our chest, our heart. When righteousness is directly in front of our heart, we are guarded from sin. We choose to be holy, to deal with sin and not let it overcome our lives. We are protected from habitual sin entering into our heart. A soldier’s feet are always ready for battle. Always ready to go out and defend his country and honor. In the same way our feet should be ready to spread the gospel of peace. Not for us, but for our Master and His kingdom. In addition we are given the shield of faith. Our faith keeps us strong. Faith is a shield. Whenever something hits us, whether they’re trials or temptations, our faith is what keeps us strong and protects us. When we leave our problems to Him and let him take our worries, the faith we have that He will mend all the wrongs, keeps us smiling when it seems as if our world is crashing down. The shield extinguishes “all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Finally we have the “helmet of salvation.” Why do people in motorcycles and football players wear helmets? The helmets are in order to protect their heads from serious injuries. Because of the assured salvation we have presented through Christ we are able to go out as soldiers of Christ and have the same assurance that we won’t be seriously injured. What really matters is already protected; our eternal lives. Because of this helmet we can go out and battle sin. I’m not saying we stand in the middle of downtown and call out on everyone’s sin. We do so in a loving manner, in an encouraging manner, in a godly way. The helmet of salvation is our protection.
Then only defensive tool we have is the “sword of the Spirit”. The sword of the Spirit is then word of God. We use the Word of God to attack evil. There is a reason why we ought to have memory verses and read our Bible. The Bible keeps us in check and rebukes us. God speaks through the Bible. Christ used verses to keep Satan away when he was tempting him. In the same way we have to keep God’s word in our hearts to keep sin away, to keep impurities and immoralities away.
We are also told to pray to one another. Like it is illegal for a soldier to leave a fellow man behind, we are told not to forget about our fellow Christian. We are to keep each other in our prayers. We are all in the same battle, the world is a battleground and we are fighting the enemy, Satan. Like a soldier keeps in contact with his commander, we are to keep in contact with ours. We keep in contact with God through prayer. We present our requests through prayer. We pray for strength and endurance in the battlefield.
We pray that we, as Christians, have the desire and the ability to go out and speak valiantly and fearlessly of our savior as a soldier should.
